SoapBox: Manitou Cog Railway Petition

This concerns the Manitou Springs – Broadmoor deal to provide revenue relief to the city while the Pikes Peak Cog Railway is closed, and to provide tax relief for the next 50 years to the Broadmoor to aid in rehabilitating the railway.

This is a recording of a citizens meeting held July 18, 2018 at the Briarhurst Manor to consider petitioning onto the November Manitou Springs ballot an item to rescind the agreement and start over. The citizens of Manitou Springs have a very short window in which to accomplish this.

Richard Skorman moderated the meeting. Speakers include John Weiss, Manitou Mayor Ken Jaray, and Colorado Springs Chief of Staff Jeff Greene.

Ruth Obee, award-winning poet and author, and husband Kent Obee – both prominent, long-time open space advocates in Colorado Springs, share their significant concerns about the proposed North Cheyenne Cañon Master Plan. This plan is scheduled for a vote by the Parks Advisory Board on May 10. They also provide an update and perspective on the “Strawberry Fields” (Strawberry Hill) land-swap, related to the cañon and proposed master plan. Colorado Springs City Council is being asked to ease developer requirements in the Banning Lewis Ranch annexation agreement. Local citizen Dave Gardner takes the mic in the this episode to explain why the proposal needs to be reworked. “We need to assure it doesn’t kill the city budget and ensure Colorado Springs develops in a way that recognizes the realities of the 21st century, with attention to transit, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.”

The next public meeting is a town hall on Friday, Feb 2, 6 to 7:30 pm, at Pikes Peak Regional Development Center, 2880 International Circle.
