A roundup of noteworthy local happenings from two former Colorado Springs city councilors who return to the studio after a 4-year break. Jan Martin and Jill Gaebler were the first Studio 809 podcasters, launching their CityTalk podcast in 2016. In this episode they catch us up on their passion projects, and more.

Everything you want to know about business and personal insurance. Michael Janzen of American Family Insurance shares a wealth of information with Colorado Springs Business Journal Publisher Amy Gillentine in this Community Conversation held October 29, 2021.

Topics include how the pandemic-related supply chain challenges are impacting insurance rates, why we need insurance agents, and what to look for when choosing an agent for commercial insurance. Did you know Colorado has one of the highest property damage rates in the country due to our wind and hail? Or that the state’s laws are very favorable for litigious plaintiff’s attorneys? Michael also gives us an inside view of how insurance companies calculate rates.

What needs to change to make our city center safe and healthy for all? The upheavals of 2020 highlighted long-standing inequities in how public space serves public health. Dr. Keshia Pollack Porter’s research focuses on tactics to center equity and public health in how we address public spaces, promoting safe and healthy environments where people live, work, play and travel.

This presentation was moderated by Susan Edmondson, executive director of the Downtown Partnership, with Q&A assistance from Tilah Larson, of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services.

This is the fourth and final event in the 2021 City Center Series hosted by the Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs. It was presented live, virtually, on April 14, 2021, and sponsored by the Council of Neighbors and Organizations (CONO).

How to Retain Your Community’s Soul During Rapid Development https://studio809podcasts.com/community-soul/ https://studio809podcasts.com/community-soul/#respond Wed, 07 Apr 2021 16:44:10 +0000 http://studio809podcasts.com/?p=6680 On the eve of Colorado Springs’ sesquicentennial, what does our city need to thrive in the next 150 years?

Community revitalization can mean many things. On the eve of Colorado Springs’ sesquicentennial, what does our city need to thrive in the next 150 years? We hear from Dan Carmody, president of Detroit Eastern Market Partnership. Dan led the renaissance of Detroit’s Eastern Market as a hub for healthy food and local jobs, eventually expanding a wholesale food district to include mixed-use buildings, additional light manufacturing, and better public spaces. “Don’t change a thing; just make it better” – the motto of many longtime Eastern Market stakeholders – speaks to how long-venerated institutions must evolve with the times to survive.

This presentation was moderated by Claire Swinford, Director of Urban Engagement at the Downtown Partnership, with Q&A assistance from Dr. Stephany Rose-Spaulding, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at UCCS.

This is the third in the 2021 City Center Series hosted by the Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs. It was presented live, virtually, on March 17, 2021. The final event in this year’s City Center Series, Public Space Design for Public Health Equity, takes place April 14, 2021. See information and registration here.

A rundown of Virtual First Friday happenings

Hosts and guests onscreenThis is a replay of Studio 809’s first live webcast, from May 1 of 2020. It’s a rundown of happenings during that evening’s Virtual First Friday, and a great way to find out how the Pikes Peak Region’s arts community is responding to the COVID crisis. Some of the events discussed happened that evening, or in the week following, and may no longer be available. For more information, check the links in these show notes.

On the first Friday of every month, First Friday Downtown features FREE monthly cultural events throughout Downtown Colorado Springs. Galleries, museums, cultural organizations, and retailers host art openings, artist receptions, performances. The event has expanded to include Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, First Friday has gone virtual, so on May 1, the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region and Studio 809 teamed up to co-host First Friday Live. This special episode of Peak Town Square streamed audio and video to Facebook Live, and was also webcast live on Studio 809’s new online radio station at studio809radio.com.

This episode was co-hosted by Angela Seals, deputy director of the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region (COPPeR) and Dave Gardner, manager of the Studio 809 podcast collective.

While much of the conversation was about that evening’s virtual events, there was also discussion of ongoing opportunities to enjoy the arts – as well as long-term challenges and opportunities for the arts community. Shelter in place, and safer at home are creating their share of community challenges, and they are definitely challenging the arts community. So, Angela, Dave and guests also discussed how the arts community has been growing, and how artists and organizations have been “showing up,” in these troubled times.

All this means the live event recording is still relevant, so we’re sharing it with you now. This episode will also give you a sense of what you might expect at the next First Friday, on June 5.

Peak Town SquareHow are Colorado Springs’ downtown businesses weathering the COVID-19 shutdown? And how can local residents best support our local businesses? Many downtown merchants are open for virtual business. Area residents are ordering take-out from downtown restaurants. Alcoholic beverages are on the menu, and free downtown parking 24/7 makes it easy to pick up an order.

Downtown Partnership President & CEO Susan Edmondson updates us on these and other downtown issues, in this special coronavirus episode of Peak Town Square. She has a lot to share, including our “Virtual First Friday” that took place April 3 on the Internet in place of the usual First Friday downtown gathering.

Traditional ways of enjoying the arts are all out of play now. But across the country – and right here in the Pikes Peak Region – artists are finding creative ways to continue playing their important role in society.

In this episode we’re joined by Andy Vick, executive director, and Angela Seals, deputy director, of COPPeR – the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region. They share what they know about the impact of the coronavirus shutdown on the arts community, how it’s adapting, what the Cultural Office is doing to help, and what area residents can do.

Earlier this month, Citizens Project cohosted a training with the ACLU of Colorado called Know Your Rights- Interactions with Law Enforcement. Jessica Howard from the ACLU came down to Colorado Springs from Denver to give a training on how people can protect themselves from police harassment and dangerous interactions, in addition to how bystanders can help de-escalate and monitor police encounters. This conversation comes at a vital time in Colorado Springs, after the police murder of De’Von Bailey this summer. This conversation is only one small piece in the work our community is doing to hold police accountable, ensure justice for communities of color, change local policies, and educate ourselves so we can protect each other when our city officials fail to do so.

Every local election cycle, Citizens Project engages in voter education and outreach efforts. We attempt to reach as many voters as possible across districts, particularly those with low turnout. The focus of these educational efforts is nonpartisan civic engagement. That said, post election results are also vital to understand, and we need to stay engaged, even when the media buzz has ended.

In this episode of Civic Circle, we address what happened this election. We are joined by Citizens Project’s Executive Director Deb Walker. Deb will talk about some of the challenges to voter education and turnout in El Paso County, and will also address the election results and the impact they could have on our community.

We also welcomed Linda Templin from Ranked Choice Voting for Colorado, who discusses this new system and places around the country where it has been successfully implemented.

After presentations, we held roundtable discussions in which community members could share their personal perspectives on these issues. Some of the main ideas and concerns from community members are shared in this episode.
