On today’s Elevating Pikes Peak Women, we’re sitting down to discuss the the struggles for food in Colorado Springs.
Today, Mary Lou Makepeace sits down with Michelle Ray, Joanna Wise, and Natalia Avila to discuss what hunger looks like in our region and how it impacts women and families; the impact of inflation and the end of emergency allotments in SNAP benefits; the response to the increased need and demand from your and other local agencies; how can community members access food if they are in need; and how can listeners help reduce hunger in our community.

Also, Food To Power in Colorado Springs has announced a meeting to address the “food desert” in southeast Colorado Springs and the closing of the last King Soopers store in the area:
Attention SE Residents!!
Due to closure of the 3rd and final King Sooopers in SE, there will be a conversation regarding or about access to fresh food. This begs a broader conversation about the many commercial sites of absentee landlords leaving these building to languish and decay.
Local food accessibility advocate, Food to Power, in partnership with the community-led Southeast Food Coalition, District 4 Councilmember Yolanda Avila, and RISE Southeast will host a community meeting regarding the temporary closure of King Soopers at 2910 South Academy Blvd. Food to Power has generated a list of potential solutions that are being investigated but want to invite the community voice to be centered in the process. This community meeting will tell us which solutions would help the most and what else we might be missing. Please attend this community meeting to on Thursday, July 13th from 5:30p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Panorama Park in Southeast Colorado Springs. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held at Deerfield Hills Community Center.

Elevating Pikes Peak Women is produced by Pikes Peak Women. Our mission is to provide a platform where women in the Pikes Peak region can become engaged and discuss civic issues about which they care deeply.
We’ve provided platforms to address healthcare reform, pay equity, community innovation, and investment, along with facilitating the meaningful contribution of women at all levels of business, government, and community. Issues may include women’s health and safety, challenges with career and family, or the actions of politicians for or against women’s rights. While such issues may be emotionally charged, we expect and maintain civility among all.
We are committed to the deliberate recruitment and support of women in leadership positions and actively work on issues that make a difference. Pikes Peak Women is an independent organization, coordinated by volunteer effort. Learn more at:
