Gary and Dee discuss topics of the day and current events. Lyn is off this week. We start with a bit of good news, starting next year, University of Illinois will be tuition free for students’ whose families make below the median. When it comes to education there is bad news as well in Arizona, Washington state and Detroit. The water is not safe for consumption in Detroit schools. We review the book “Thank You for Being Late,” by Thomas Friedman. He discusses many topics including the need to embrace life long learning. How do we go forward to the new economy? We will need public internet. How is that going in Colorado? More cities are voting for it. Some are making progress, Colorado Springs and El Paso County are not. We cover Senator McCain’s funeral, briefly. The current Republican administration is proposing billions in aid to farmers adversely effected by the tariffs imposed by our former trade partners. Is manufacturing dying in the US? What is happening to our social safety net? The Republicans are proposing some drastic slashes to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Our highway trust fund is extremely underfunded. One of the recommendations from the Republican administration is to tax bicycle tires. For the most part, bicycles aren’t allowed on roads funded by the trust. We finish with a discussion on our steps closer to an ever more dangerous precedent. American citizens born near the southern border are being denied passports. In a further scary step, Bank of America is denying access to bank accounts for customers suspected of not being citizens.
