Gary, Lyn and Dee discuss current news and politics.
We start the podcast with Lyn’s eyewitness account of the Trump rally and Trump supporters wanted to know how Lyn’s 401K is doing. While stocks have gone up, it is important to remember that the number of Americans owning stocks has declined since the recession. 84% of stocks in the US are owned by high income elites.
The list of military medical treatment facilities that will start turning away retirees and their dependents has been published. This is a topic that we are passionate about. We discuss the changes coming for retirees, their dependents, and active military to the Military Medical system. Whose benefit are the changes really for? The readiness of our armed forces? The headlong rush to privatize the military medical system? Or are the lobbyists finally getting their way to help the bottom line of the companies they represent?
Despite previous claims from Rep. Doug Lamborn that no one in this district would be affected, there is an outpatient treatment center that will start turning away retirees and their dependents at Fort Carson. If you regularly rely on that facility (Robinson-Carson outpatient clinic) you might want to let your representative know about your displeasure. (Local office is at 1125 Kelly Johnson Blvd. Suite #330, phone 719-520-0055.)
Secretary of State Pompeo is upset that our European allies didn’t welcome him with a opens arms greeting. Can you blame them? It is not as if this administration has been a reliable or equitable partner.
Private equity firms are burrowing further into the medical support fields. This can’t be good for the consumer. Profits come first with these vultures, not your well being. These firms seem to be specializing in Emergency Rooms and anesthesiologists. Going to a hospital in network isn’t enough any more.
We have good news for local college students, the local public transit is offering free rides with a valid student ID. It is the second year for this program. Be sure to take advantage of it!
Our second good news story comes out of Denver. A local hotel went up for sale, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless bought it. They converted the hotel into 139 micro apartments for homeless. Residents only pay a portion of their income for their rent. Most residents pay $100 or less. We have talked before about how housing people first leads to better outcomes. Is this a model we can copy here in the Springs?
