Gary, Lyn and Dee discuss politics and current events. Admittedly, there is a lot of overlap.
The Coronavirus (AKA COVID-19) is showing the weaknesses in our medical system from the budget cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health. Let’s throw in cuts to the Graduate Medical Education program and you see there has been created a deadly and toxic stew with a helping of incompetence and downright stupidity.
Postal workers being fired for injuries sustained on the job. Where’s the EEOC when you need them? HHS workers unprepared to handle the Coronavirus? The aircraft (Civilian/Military) that carried people with the Coronavirus to the U.S., were they decontaminated after their flights or put into service? Do we have the “Katrina Virus”?
Despite claims of the US being the most prepared, we are not. What can one do to try to avoid catching COVID-19? We’ll list some of the most simple steps that everyone can take to prevent the spread of any disease.
- Wash your hands, frequently for at least 20 seconds with a good lather. Make sure to get the backs of your hands as well as your palms. (Make sure to wash after touching public areas, elevator buttons, door handles, etc. You can use an alcohol based hand sanitizer in a pinch, but these will eventually dry out your skin which could lead to cracked skin. Cracked skin could be an entryway for germs.)
- Avoid touching your face, especially the nose and mouth areas.
- Avoid physical contact with others as much as possible. This is an airborne disease and can be spread by people who do not have any symptoms. There is no need to shake hands with everyone you meet.
- Sneeze or cough into the crook of your elbow, encourage others to do the same.
- Men might want to consider removing facial hair.
- The basics — get enough rest, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet. (This will keep your immune system stronger.)
- Don’t bother with a mask, most are not of the quality to help. Masks are more needed for health professionals.
