It’s definitely feeling like fall. Join Gary, Lyn and Dee as we welcome our guest, Orlando Avion, from FairVote.org. What a lot of topics this week! We start with a discussion of issues on the upcoming Colorado state ballot. (Be sure to check your registration folks!) We have two related measures one to change oil setbacks, and one for just compensation for property owners if values drop due to a change in laws. There are two ballot issues dealing with transportation, one would raise taxes, one wouldn’t. Neither one gives us any details on what the money would be spent on. There is a ballot issue dealing with funding for education. This tax increase would only effect households making more than $150K/yr. There is a referendum to put tighter restrictions on pay day loan companies. There is a measure to lower the age for state senators and representatives. There is a proposal to legalize industrial Hemp growth. There are two ballot initiatives to form independent redistricting commissions. One would effect both state representation and federal representation. We are predicted to get another representative in the US House after the 2020 Census. We discuss “The Cure for Our Broken Political Process.” This book has some rather interesting ideas. Besides Rank Choice Voting, Multi-Member Districts seems the most interesting. It also covers proportional voting, eliminating the ‘winner take all,’ status that we see in most federal elections. (Maine has started moving away from this winner take all.)
