Gary and Dee discuss the latest version of the Republican Tax Cut bill, otherwise known as Trumpcare. What would this new ‘healthcare’ bill change? For adults under the age of 65 the consequences are disastrous. The premiums could rise to as much as five times what a younger adult would pay. Currently, that is capped at three times. While this bill is still awaiting a CBO score, it is estimated to be very similar to the previous version. That version had 15 million people losing health care immediately with a total of 22 million additional people losing health care after one decade. There are an estimated 208,000 deaths in ten years due to lack of health care predicted. With severe cuts to Medicaid, nursing homes will be hard hit. Protections for people with pre-existing conditions could disappear on a state-by-state basis. Planned Parenthood will be defunded nationwide. People going there for cancer screenings, birth control, and other health care will be left with no affordable alternatives. People with disabilities will be hurt under this plan as cuts to Medicaid are expected to be deep and long lasting. The current plan also wants to eliminate the essential services requirements. This could leave people who need mental health care, pregnancy coverage or prescription coverage in dire straits. The Senate included a provision to exempt members of Congress from having to sign up for this plan. A House clause to do the same was struck. If the bill becomes law, both houses would benefit.
What is this all for? A $563 Billion tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. The people who need the least help would get the most. The people who need the most help would get the least.
